First Semester Peer Program

New students sometimes feel overwhelmed when they begin their studies, particularly during their first semester. The transition from reglemented school work to an independent, scientific oriented approach to learning often proves difficult. One of the aims of the university is to support new students right at the start of their university careers. With its First Semester Peer Program the Career Service contributes towards achieving this goal. New students receive optimal support enabling them to quickly become integrated into university life and successfully complete their studies without undue delay.

Experienced students from all the different courses of study provide support for new students within the framework of the First Semester Peer Program. The following support is provided at approximately eight meetings:

  • Support of the new student on campus and in Deggendorf

  • Help with organizational procedures

  • Introduction to various points of interest (library, the university’s website, ….)

  • Registration for examinations, electives, major subjects ….

  • Informal gatherings where general problems can be discussed

  • Forming study groups and providing study support

  • Offering tutoring in the more challenging subjects

Students with (very) good grades can participate in the Peer Program from the second semester on. For their work in supporting first semester students they are employed as student assistants by the Career Service. Interested students are welcome to apply to the Career Service.
